En av mine absolutte favorittbøker gjennom tidene, som jeg leser om igjen med ujevne mellomrom. Det som slo meg denne gang, som jeg egentlig ikke har tenkt over før, er at Sam fremstilles som en lydig hund i mesteparten av denne boka! Typisk datidens britisk overklassesyn på forholdet Herre - tjener (gartner) ? Etter å ha sett filmene blir jeg stadig imponert over hvor tro mot bøkene de er, og de endringene som er gjort i filmene komplimenterer bøkene.

Den første "Ringenes Herre" filmen har alltid vært en av mine absolutt favoritt filmer. Av den grunn så synes jeg det var på høy tid å lese boken som filmen var basert på. Selv om enkelte deler av romanen ikke samsvarer helt med filmen, så følger filmen bokens oppbygning fra begynnelsen til slutt.

Etter å ha lest den kan jeg godt skjønne at Tolkien regnes som en klassiker innen fantasy sjangeren. Han har skapt en verden i "Ringenes Herre" som virker nøye planlagt med rike beskrivelser. Jeg må si at det tar tid å komme seg gjennom boken. Ikke nødvendigvis fordi den er lang, men nettopp fordi Tolkien bruker svært mye tid på å beskrive alt. Og da mener jeg virkelig alt. Det i seg selv kan fungere hvis man er av den type leser som liker plot fylt med (til dels) intrikate beskrivelser. Men i lengden kan beskrivelsene bli en smule kjedelige og overveldende. Men omgivelsene og karakterene i seg selv er så interessante at man i store deler av boken ikke kjeder seg likevel. Om man har sett filmen så vil jeg absolutt anbefale at man gir boken en sjanse.

Det er visdom å se nødvendigheten i øynene, når alle andre muligheter er overveid; skjønt det for dem som klynger seg til falske håp kan se ut som dårskap.

Men dette betyr å dra i landflyktighet, å flykte fra farene inn i andre farer og avlede dem etter meg. Og jeg må vel reise alene, om jeg skal greie det og redde Hobsyssel. Men jeg føler meg så liten, så rykket opp med roten, og - ja, fortvilet. Fienden er så sterk og fryktelig.

Fortjener det! Det kan vel være. Mange som lever, fortjener å dø. Og noen som dør, fortjener livet. Kan du gi dem det? Vær da heller ikke så ivrig etter å avsi døden i dom. For selv de meget vise kan ikke se hvordan alt skal ende.
