All my life I've wanted to go to bed with an American, and now I have, and I'm beginning to see why people don't do it more often. Apart from Americans, that is, who probably go to bed with Americans all the time.
And if you lose your sense of location, you get homesick. Stands to reason.
Me, I'll be playing Beatles when I get home. Abbey Road, probably, although I'll programme the CD to skip out "Something". The Beatles were bubblegum cards and Help at the Saturday morning cinema and toy plastic guitars and singing "Yellow Submarine" at the top of my voice in the back row of the coach on school trips. They belong to me, not to me and Laura, or me and Charlie, or me and Alison Ashworth, and though they'll make me feel something, they won't make me feel anything bad.
Oh, we know, both of us, that it shouldn't matter that there's more to life than pairing off, that the media is to blame, blah blah blah. But it's hard to see that, sometimes, on a Sunday morning, when you're maybe ten hours from going down to the pub for a drink and the first conversation of the day.
Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands - literally thousands - of songs about broken hearts and rejection and pain and misery and loss. The unhappiest people I know, romantically speaking, are the ones who like pop music the most; and I don't know whether pop music has caused this unhappiness, but I do know that they've been listening to the sad songs longer than they've been living the unhappy lives.
I know I'm being stupid, but I don't want her coming to my shop. If she came into my shop, I might really get to like her, and then I'd be waiting for her to come in all the time, and then when she did come in I'd be nervous and stupid, and probably end up asking her out for a drink in some cackhanded roundabout way, and either she wouldn't catch my drift, and I'd feel like an idiot, or she'd turn me down flat, and I'd feel an idiot. And on the way home after the gig, I'm already wondering whether she'll come tomorrow, and whether it will mean anything if she does, and if it does mean something, then which one of us it will mean something to, although Barry is probably a non-starter.
Fuck. I hate all this stuff. How old do you have to get before it stops?
But I want to see Carla, Charlie's friend, who's right up my street. I want to see her because I don't even know where my street is; I don't even know which part of town it's in, which city, which country, so maybe she'll enable me to get my bearings.
Som regel er bøkene best, men iblant har vi vel alle opplevd at filmene faktisk er bedre enn originalmaterialet de er basert på.
Her er ei liste over mine så langt...
