Godt fortalt om en keisers fall.
Dette er en tjukk bok om en kort, men dramatisk periode i Indias historie som William Dalrymple forteller med en fantastisk god driv. Boka dreier seg om opprøret mot britene i gamle Delhi 1857. En av hovedpersonene er Indias siste keiser - i all fall i navnet - og hans fåfengte ønske om å holde muslimene og hinduene sammen i en periode som ble stadig mer preget av motsetninger dem i mellom, og med en britisk misjonstrang. Den er fin å lese sammen med E.M. Forster: En reise til India som også handler om kulturelle misforståelser og klønete britiske koloniadministratorer, men som er en velskrevet (og filmet) roman.
