Den yngre Edda gir en innføring i norrøn mytologi. Odin, Tor, Midgardsormen og alle de andre mytiske figurene er for all ettertid gjort levende av høvdingen og historikeren Snorre Sturlason.
Snorres poetikk - Edda - kommer etter en litterær storhetstid, men er til forskjell fra de klassiske europeiske poetikker samtidig en av de viktigste kildene til viten om den forutgående diktning den beskriver. I det gjengse bildet av norrønt livssyn settes gjerne styrken, makten og æren i høysetet. Men i Snorres Edda finnes situasjoner og skjebner som peker i motsatt retning - mot avmakt, nederlag og det lilles forrang, den kritiske detalj som forstyrrer eller gjenoppretter en prekær kosmisk likevekt.
Anne Holtsmarks oversettelse av Snorre-Edda ble først utgitt i 1950. Hennes søster Karen Holtsmarks illustrasjoner er også denne gang benyttet. To av våre fremste kjennere av norrøn kultur, Jon Gunnar Jørgensen og Gro Steinsland, har skrevet henholdsvis forord og etterord til den foreliggende nyutgivelse.
