Omtale fra Den Norske Bokdatabasen
This is the story of Daniel Waterhouse, fearless thinker and courageous puritan, pursuing knowledge in the company of the great minds of the Baroque Age. It is a chronicle of the near-legendary exploits of Half-Cocked Jack Shaftoe, London street urchin turned swashbuckling adventurer, known to all as the King of the Vagabonds, as he risks life and limb for fortune and love while slowly going mad from the pox. And it is the story of Eliza, rescued by Jack from a Turkish harem to become spy, confidante, and pawn of royals as she reinvents a contentious continent through the newborn power of international finance.

And we are speaking only of kings and noblemen. Imagine the sufferings of the common people and the Vagabonds, who possess equal stature in God's eyes. And yet you ask me whether my mission is philosophick or diplomnatic, as if those two things can neatly be separated.
"It was Sluy's box. Therefore, he was the host. Therefore, it was his responsibility to make a formal introduction of Etienne d'Arcachon to you, mademoiselle. But he was too Dutch, drunk, and distracted to perform his proper rôle. I never cleared my throat so many times - but to no avail. Monsieur d'Arcachon was placed in an impossible situation!"
