Boken tar utgangspunkt i teorien om Gaia, et syn på jordkloden som en levende organisme. I flere tusen år har menneskene utnyttet jordkloden uten å tenke på konsekvensene, noe som har ført til klimaendringer. Jorden har i stor grad klart å regulere dette selv, for som organisme søker den alltid etter likevekt. I de senere årene har klimaet forandret seg drastisk.
