Now he had to break the man's bones. And he was now sure that he could not go through with it.
And he was also sure that he must.

The rain was on his side. The brashness about what he was about to attempt was on his side. Speed was on his side. His gun was on his side.
Time was against him. Sanity was against him. The law was against him. Reason was against him. Morality was against him.
He could do nothing but sit low and urge his mind to shout over the voices of caution that kept filling his mind.

He had to get a grip, clear his mind, and apply himself to the three options that made the most sense.
Manipulation.
Escape.
Suicide.

Det er ikke mange mennesker forunt å oppleve en tiger ute i det fri. Den dagen la det mektige dyret det store hodet sitt inntil meg og lot meg klø det bak ørene som en vanlig huskatt.

If a person is asleep to both the pleasures of this earth and those of the next, it could be said he or she is in a coma. Deep slumber.
(...)
The lost would rather stay lost than be found in a coma.

Magic is a great thing and scarcely any one knows anything about it exept a few people in old books - and Mary a little, because she was born in India, where there are fakirs.

"Of course there must be a lot of Magic in the world," he said wisely one day, "but people don't know what it is like or how to make it. Perhaps the beginning is just to say nice things are going to happen until you make them happen."

"Is the spring coming?" He said. "What's it like? You don't see it in rooms if you are ill."
"it's the sun shining on the rain and the rain falling on the sunshine, and things pushing up and working under the earth," said Mary.

We said there warn't no home like a raft, after all. Other places do seem so cramped up and smothery, but a raft don't. You feel mighty free and easy and comfortable on a raft.

It was fifteen minutes before I got up and humble myself to a nigger - but I done it, and I warn's ever sorry for it afterward, neither. I didn't do him no more mean tricks, and I wouldn't done that one if I'd a knowed it would make him feel that way.

We catched fish and talked, and we took a swim now and then to keep off sleepiness. It was kind of solemn, drifting down the big still river, laying on our backs looking up at the stars, and we didn't ever feel like talking loud, and it warn't often that we laughed, only a little kind of low chuckle. We had mighty good weather as a general thing, and nothing ever happened to us at all, that night, nor the next, nor the next.
