It's Easter in Reading - a bad time for eggs - and no one can remember the last sunny day. Humpty Dumpty, well-known nursery favourite, large egg, ex-convict and former millionaire philanthropist is found shattered beneath a wall in a shabby area of town. Following the pathologist's careful reconstruction of Humpty's shell, Detective Inspector Jack Spratt and his Sergeant Mary Mary are soon grappling with a sinister plot involving cross-border money laundering, the illegal Bearnaise sauce market, corporate politics and the cut and thrust world of international Chiropody. As Jack and Mary stumble around the streets of Reading in Jack's Lime Green Austin Allegro, the clues pile up, but Jack has his own problems to deal with. And on top of everything else, the JellyMan is coming to town.

'Impressive, eh?'
'Very,' said Jack. 'How did you amass all these?'
'Well,' said Pewter, 'you know that person who always borrows books and never gives them back?'
'Yes--?'
'I'm that person.'
Stevie then stared at Prometheus with all the seriousness that one-year-olds can muster, which is quite a lot.
'Da-woo,' he said at length.
'A-boo,' replied Prometheus.
'Woo--?' asked Stevie, doubtfully.
'Wa-boo. Oodle-boo,' responded Prometheus with a large smile.
'Da-woo!' said Stevie with a shriek of laughter.
'You speak baby gibberish?' asked Jack.
'Fluently. The adult education centre ran a course and I have a lot of time on my hands.'
'So what did he say?'
'I don't know.'
'I thought you said you spoke gibberish?'
'I do. But your baby doesn't. I think he's speaking either pre-toddler nonsense, a form of infant burble or an obscure dialect of gobbledegook. In any event, I can't understand a word he's saying.'
'Oh.'
