I feel like the art world has a pretty tense relationship with popularity (s.9). The artist does not need the public to think his work is any good if they are not paying his wages or boosting his self-esteem (s.10).

'International Art English' rebukes ordinary English for its lack of nouns. Visual becomes visuality. Global becomes globality. Potential becomes potentiality. And experience of course becomes experienceability. They describe the metaphysical seasickness you get from reading this sort of text, where it all sounds a bit like inexpertly translated French (s.33).

How to tell if a photograph is art? In the 1990s you could tell it was art photography because no one was smiling. But the main reason you could tell these photographs were art was that they were huge. I asked Martin Parr, the very famous and brilliant photographer, if he could give me a definition of an art photo as opposed to another kind of photo, "Well, if it's bigger than two meters and it's priced higher than five figures" (s. 64).
