The young, now exiled prince Patroclus, comes to king Peleus's court, and feels alone and mocked by the other boys. The king's son, the golden boy, Achilles, is so different from Patroclus, and yet they are drawn together like magnets. Achilles's mother, Thetis, the sea goddess, does not approve of her son's companion, but for once he refuses to budge. The two boys grow up to be young men, and their friendship evolves into something deeper and more profound as each day passes. Achilles is skilled in many things and when he's summoned to war against the Troys, he has no choice but to go. A reluctant Patroclus follows. He knows what the prophecy says, and it breaks his heart.
I had no expectations when I started this book, but I was instantly smitten and entranced by it. The relationship between Achilles and Patroclus is so beautifully described, and their devotion for each other and their honesty are so precious.
