En professor/litterat/kritikker skrev flere bøker om samlivet -før og etter ektefellen fikk diagnosen Alzheimer.

Like the heart, it has it own reasons, which reason knows nothing about. If no one interferes, it knows how to do the right thing at the right moment.

I 1999 utga den da 74 år gamle Oxford don John Bayley, sin bok, "Elegy for Iris". Boken er en vakker fortelling om, ungdom, alderdom, et brilliant liv, og en udødelig kjærlighet.

Bok nr.2 " Iris and Her Friends" ble utgitt i 2000.

Carolyn See i Washington Post, uttalte følgende om bøkene: "God bless John Bayley for telling us the truth about marriage and aging, and the chains that ensnare us, as long as we consent to be bound by affection."

Og ektefellen var selvfølgelig Iris Murdoch.
