Greenpeace’s research unit concluded that ten hedge funds made an estimatet $1.9 billion profit by capitalising on the rise in food prices in the immediate aftermath of Russia’s invation of Ukraine.

After Russia invaded, 7 million metrisk tons of Ukrainian grain could no longer be exported. This represented barely 0,9 per cent of global production. Yet grain prices rose by 70 per cent. Not so much because of that little extra supply and demand but because of marked speculation. In recent years, we have begun to look at food more and more as an investment.
