Yet despite the plethora of information about previous dictators, one modern, living man has escaped almost all international scrutiny for his crimes. He is Than Shwe - the ruler of the Southeast Asian country of Burma. There are no books about Than Shwe, no movies, few web pages, and only a handful of report references. Even though Than Shwe has destroyed as many villages as al-Bashir, carried out a rape campaign similar to the crimes of Serbias's Milosevic, and recruited possibly more child soldiers than any other country in the world (shattering misplaced perceptions of child soldiers as an "African" problem), he is virtually unknown to the outside world.
