Beluga, which is a corruption of the Russian name belukha, or white whale, are toothed whales, with a conspicuous white colouration and without any dorsal fin. Instead, belugas have a rather tough ridge on the mid-line of their back which may be used to break thin sea ice to allow the animals to breathe.
