In late May, as Burma quickly fell under re-occupation, the British Army issued Proclamation No. 6, which declared Japanese currency invalid without any offer of compensation or exchange. This declaration wiped out overnight whatever Burmese had saved over the past three and a half years, impoverishing all indiginous classes except for those who had fled to India (who had lost much themselves in the 1942 exodus).
