Many countries in the West have sought to compensate for falling birth rates with increased immigration from the South and East. But this approach is fraught with problems - partly because of conflicts between the native population and immigrants, and partly because of conflicts among different groups of immigrants. The notion that migration is justified as a means of improving living standards in the rich countries, and that poor countries do not have to work with determination to lower the rise in population, soon runs up against an ecological wall.
