The book is set on an island inhabited by the offspring of the Greek Gods. You have the all mighty pure bloods and there are the half-bloods who are considered like second class citizens. Pure bloods are the head of society, while half-bloods work as guards and hunters (sentinels). They are hunting down and killing an evil species named Daimonds, who are pure bloods who have been turned by having their essence sucked out.
The main character Alex is a half-blood with a messed up past. After her mom is killed she returns to her old school. Having been away for three years she has a lot to catch up on and a sentinel and pureblood agree to train her over the summer holidays. Alex is an interesting character who is fun to read about. She has a lot of funny remarks that can come across as bitchy, but we get to see a more unsecure side to her as well. She might be hard to relate to from time to time, but none the less is she an interesting character.
For the plot I expected something from Greek Mythology, seeing that this is where the author got her inspiration from. So I have to say I am a bit disappointed in that section, no Greek monsters for me. There is however some problems involving forbidden love and some kick ass ninja moves thrown in there so is some things going on. You are always entertained and there is always something going on in Alex life, whether it is a big discovery or a small bitch fight.
I really liked this book seeing as it had a lot of fun characters and a nice plot. My only problem is that this book reminds me so much of the Vampire Academy series. You have the society with the three groups, snobs, fighters and evil essence and life sucking bad guys. Not to forget about the trainer-student relationship, the control of element and the rare ability of controlling the fifth element as well as reading your partners mind... The list goes on. So if this author is a VA fan then maybe she should be writing fan fiction and not her own stories? But other than that the writing, characters and plot are greatly (re-(?))written!
