The book contains nine articles reflecting some of the key research themes and issues addressed by the Human Rights Programme at CMI. The articles also point forward to the role the institute is likely to play in the future evolution of the field. Part one of the book explores challenges involved in promoting human rights and consolidating democracy in developing countries. Part two discusses the philosophical foundations of the human rights perspective and the position of social and economic rights. Part three explores ways in which to describe and deal with human rights violations. The publication of this anthology marks the 75th anniversary of the Chr. Michelsen Institute.

Human rights are currently an important area of research at the Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI), as they have been for the past 20 years. This anthology contains nine articles reflecting some of the key research themes and issues addressed by the Human Rights Programme at CMI.
