Omtale fra forlaget

This book deals with children at risk and how to minister to them and their families in crisis situations. Those engaged in the upbringing of children know how important it is to have knowledge about the needs and the mental, social, moral and religious development of children, but also to understand some of the dynamics of communicating with children. Part one of this book focuses on these aspects, and central in this is to focus on the symbolic language of play and to minister to children through play therapy. In part two of the book a theological model for ministering to children at risk and in crisis is presented. This theological analysis aims at providing a platform for moral advocacy for children experiencing different victimizations through e.g. sexual and substance abuse. The author claims that the predisposition of developing an effective intervention strategy to children in crisis is an interdisciplinary collaboration and the building of a network of relations between professionals. An exchange with constructive recombinations in the intervention and counseling strategies toward children implies a release of immanent resources where many contribute by their competence to find solutions. Through a convergence of competence, both ministers, teachers, lay- and clergy counselors and parents should work on the implementation of such an integration model. This model implies the solving of methodological and conceptional problems and points to the possibility of developing a transdisciplinarity - the development of a higher modality of ministry among children and their families. In part three of the book, this integrated ministry model is applied on children facing death and grieving loss. Children, care-deficiency and dysfunctional families constitute another central focus with emphasis on applying the ministry model on children facing incest, sexual and substance abuse. The author reminds us of the principle "children first" which should inspire all of us to work toward developing most effective intervention strategies to meet the needs which social reality presents. In this effort the church and the school together with parents and other agencies should aim at higher responsibilities and involvement in ministering to children at risk as well as their families. Asbjørn Simonnes, born 1951, has since 1980 lectured at Volda University College, mainly within general teaching of religion and philosophy, ethics and religious education. He is a member of the International Society for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, and he earned in 1996 his Doctor of Ministry degree from Fuller Theological Seminary, USA. Simonnes and other scholars, co-authored with Larry Christenson (ed.), the book, Welcome Holy Spirit: A Study of Charismatic Renewal in the Church, and he is the person responsible for and the chief author of the book, An Encounter with Children in Grief and Crisis.
