Omtale fra forlaget
Major changes took place in the Norwegian society in the last decades of the nineteenth century; among them a substantial population growth and a rapid urbanization. But how was the impact of these processes on the health situation in Norway? Based on data from the official health statistics, this atlas visualizes by means of tables, graphs and maps how the occurence of the different contagious diseases was heavily dependent on social conditions and demographic unrest. It is possible that bad health for a period was regarded as an unavoidable cost of urbanization and economic growth. The calculation of a concern index support this theory, but indicates that a shift in attitudes took place around 1890. The atlas is supposed to be a useful source of information for students and researchers working in the fields of social and medical history on local or nationwide levels.
