Da jeg sto overfor døden hadde jeg uttalt bønner, avgudsbønner, jeg hadde bedt slik som hedninger mumler besvergelser. Men nå ba jeg ordentlig, bønnfalt standhaftig og beregnende, ansikt til med Guds mørke. Forunderlig natt! Det rareste var dette, at så snart dagen hadde grydd, krøp jeg, som hadde konversert med Gud, ut av huset som en rotte ut av hullet sitt - bare litt større, et laverestående dyr, en ting som kunne bli jaget og drept på grunn av en tilfeldig impuls blant herrene våre. Kanskje rotter også ber tillitsfullt til Gud. Sannelig, hvis vi ikke har lært noe annet, har denne krigen lært oss medynk - medynk med de enklere sjelene som lider under vårt herredømme.
