Omtale fra forlaget

Written in Greek by the only Roman emperor who was also a philosopher, without any intention of publication, the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius offer a remarkable series of challenging spiritual reflections and exercises developed as the emperor struggled to understand himself and make sense of the universe. While the Meditations were composed to provide personal consolation and encouragement, Marcus Aurelius also created one of the greatest of all works of philosophy: a timeless collection that has been consulted and admired by statesmen, thinkers and readers throughout the centuries.

Translated with notes by MARTIN HAMMOND with an Introduction by DISKIN CLAY

Reject your sense of injury and the injury itself disappears

Look beneath the surface; let not the several quality of a thing nor its worth escape thee.

Death is a cessation from the impression of the senses, the tyranny of the passions, the errors of the mind, and the servitude of the body.

Be like the promontory against which the waves continually break, but it stands firm and tames the fury of the water around it.

Unhappy am I, because this has happened to me.—Not so, but Happy am I, though this has happened to me, because I continue free from pain, neither crushed by the present nor fearing the future.

Will then this which has happened prevent thee from being just, magnanimous, temperate, prudent, secure against inconsiderate opinions and falsehood; will it prevent thee from having modesty, freedom, and everything else, by the presence of which man’s nature obtains all that is its own?

Remember, too, an every occasion which leads thee to vexation to apply this principle: not that this is a misfortune, but that to bear it nobly is good fortune.

Lister som inneholder dette verket

Yann Martel, forfatteren av Life of Pi, fant ut at den kanadiske statsministeren trengte kulturelt påfyll.

What is Stephen Harper reading?

  • Book Number 94: The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie

  • Book Number 95: Cakes and Ale, by W. Somerset Maugham

  • Book Number 96: Six Characters in Search of an Author, by Luigi Pirandello

  • Books Number 97: Paul à Québec, by Michel Rabagliati, Le géant de la gaffe, by André Franquin, and Le lotus bleu, by Hergé

  • Book Number 98: Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

  • Book Number 99: A History of Reading, by Alberto Manguel

  • Book Number 100: Scorched, by Wajdi Mouawad, translated from the French by Linda Gaboriau
