Literary America is a one-volume survey of American literature written especially for students of English as a foreing language at the college and university level. It covers the entire span of literary expression in the United States from before the arrival af the Europeans to the present day, placing it in the larger context of culture and society. The leading writers, literary currents, and aesthetic develoments are presented in chapters dealing with the major periods, bringing out the cultural and artistic integrity of each period. Each chapter is prefaced by a survey of the social scene as it relates to literature. Significant cultural events and parallel developments in the other arts are examined before the major authors are presented in separate "profiles", that convey a concrete sense of personality, artistic achievement, and the cultural movement in which the writer lived.
